This rousing version of Theseus and the Minotaur is an adventure story, with all the exciting bits left in. Saviour Pirotta focuses his retelling on the idea that Theseus is always making rash decisions that get him into trouble, until his bad choices finally catch up to him in the end, and he vows to do better. The Minotaur bits are extra exciting, with dramatic lighting and dynamic poses. I especially like the image of Theseus retracing his way through the Labyrinth from above. The combination of quick-paced adventure, visual storytelling, and clearly written text make this book a great choice to boost young readers’ confidence.

Saviour Pirotta and Jan Lewis’ First Greek Myths series provide adaptations of myths perfectly suited for newly independent readers. The text is kid-friendly, and the cartoonish images are colorful and exciting. Affordable copies are readily available on most used book websites. – Krishni Burns
