This is an engrossing graphic novel for elementary and middle school kids, set in an all-female world on the fictional island of Themiscyra. It tells part of the origin story of DC Comics’ Wonder Woman, but I read it with enjoyment before I realized that. No spoilers for the story, which kept me turning pages. Diana, the protagonist, is eleven years old, and the authors portray her inner life with sensitivity. The graphic style is Disney-esque, and indeed the illustrator has worked on several Disney films, including Frozen and Moana. The colors (by Lark Pien) are bright and eye-pleasing. This is not a book for teaching kids about Greek myth and the ancient world, since it riffs freely and imaginatively on ancient stories, characters, and settings rather than faithfully recounting traditional tales. But it’s fun and highly appealing. – Diane Arnson Svarlien
